A Lurking Yard

Regular price $74.00

A Lurking Yard is about the moniker tradition that originates from migratory workers in the United States from the late 19th to mid-20th centuries. By creating a hobo code, symbols conveying crucial information, they were able to communicate with one another about local conditions as they moved from place to place. As it evolved, many began leaving personal marks, or monikers, akin to modern graffiti tags. Though the hobo lifestyle has declined, monikers persist and influence contemporary graffiti culture globally. This collection of monikers was collected from 2023 and 2024 in East Vancouver. Presented in chronological order according to the dates accompanying each image.

About the artist: Brian Addison Bennett, a photographer with graffiti roots, has self-published print media for over a decade, including his Mortal Dilemma photo book series and various art zines. He values physical media's permanence, offering future generations an unfiltered window into the past.
