British Journal of Photography’s 2023 Portrait issue sees artists, writers and curators bring the freshest perspectives to this most storied photography format. Dive into profiles of Kolkata chronicler Soham Gupta, the entwined photo collages of cover artist Mickalene Thomas, and an intimate studio visit with Nadav Kander – penned and pictured by Alice Zoo.

This issue also tackles Instagram nudity censorship and the art of commissioning fashion and newspaper editorials, while winning series from BJP’s Portrait of Humanity are explored by Alex Daniel.
